Scrapbooking

When some of my friends were getting into scrapbooking, I held back. I just couldn't see spending all that money to highlight a few pictures. But then I stayed with my brother and sister-in-law for several weeks in the snowy tundra (aka Michigan's U.P.). Katie had lots of supplies she was willing to share with me, and I had nothing better to do, not that I was against getting creative and crafty. So I got started. Since she was so willing to share with me, that first shopping trip wasn't so overwhelming. I got a few basic supplies, and I was off. Of course, that first scrapbook still isn't finished. But I've put together several since then, and helped make pages for several others. Now I see the pass-time as more of a creative exercise than a way to over-embellish personal photos.

Over time, my style has evolved, too. I come across a technique or particular kind of embellishment, and I see how many variations I can come up with before I move onto another one. I've also switched from wanting my whole album coordinated, to just making sure facing pages look good together and present the same content in their pictures.

And I don't try to scrapbook everything!  That first album will be sort of a children's book of the story of how my brother and sister-in-law met (I had written the story for an English class).  Another album is dedicated to my extended family - it's a great way to keep all those Christmas card photos and school pictures.  And most of the pages I've made for others are all about the first year of each of my nieces and nephews - first winter, first Christmas, first bath, first measurements... but not every waking moment!  Another on-going project is an album about me: my hobbies, clubs I'm in, etc.
